I’m a writer. Drawn to stories, people, the past, the future – I write about what’s precious and interesting, and support others as they do the same.
My latest books for adults are Earthed (Elliott and Thompson, 2021) and its reimagined North American edition A Thousand Ways to Pay Attention (The Experiement, 2022): memoirs blended with fiction and poetry telling a story of neurodivergence and of returning to the land when the world outside (and inside) your head feels strange and volatile. My latest book for children, Amazing Activists, was published by Walker books in 2022.
I’m working on two new books at the moment and am looking forward to the publication of This Allotment, to which I have contributed an essay, in June 2024.
I’m not very good at is updating this website so please expect it to be somewhat out of date.
I help other writers by offering supportive writing coaching and mentoring as well as reading services, help with re-draft and structure, proposal reviews and manuscript consultation. I occasionally teach and tutor for other organisations and enjoy chairing conversations about writing at events and festivals.
And my experiences of combining writing with parenting have led me to set up the Mothers Who Write community and retreats: restorative, supportive and creative spaces for writers-who-happen-to-be-mothers.
I came to writing as a women’s rights campaigner, co-founder, former trustee and CEO of the human rights charity Birthrights and an occasional journalist. I have bylines for many publications: from Guardian and Observer Magazine, Stylist, Telegraph, Huffington Post, Stella Magazine and Vice to industry publications like Mandarin Oriental Magazine and Midwives Magazine.
I live on a croft in north east Scotland with my family, plants and animals.
